Welcoming the launch of the National End of Life Survey results

We at the Caru Programme welcome the launch of the results of the first National End of Life Survey in which bereaved people were asked about the care provided to a family member or friend in the last months and days of their life in order to improve care.

Firstly, we would like to thank all those who shared their experiences of the end-of-life care of their loved one. Dying, death and bereavement will affect us all at some point in our lives. This survey provides us with information that we can use to monitor and improve the delivery of end-of-life care informed by real life experiences. Any focus on end-of-life care must also examine the impact on those who are left to grieve the death of their loved one. This survey will provide valuable information on the emotional impact of end of life on family and friends.

We are heartened by the findings and responses reported in relation to the experience of people at end of life within nursing homes where 85.4% of participants rated the overall care their relative or friend received from healthcare staff in a nursing home or residential care facility in the last three months of their life as ‘good’ or ‘very good’

Through the Caru Programme we will continue to work with all stakeholders to prioritise supporting nursing home staff to provide quality person-centred palliative and end-of-life care in nursing homes.
