What is the mission of the Caru Programme?
The mission of Caru is to deliver a nationally recognised programme that engages with multiple stakeholders to provide a sustainable quality improvement programme so Nursing Home staff feel confident to deliver excellent palliative, end of life and bereavement care.
Who is this programme for?
This is a free programme available to all public, private and voluntary Nursing Home staff of all levels.
How is the programme delivered?
The programme has five training and educational elements. Each element is designed to give staff the tools they need to enhance their end-of-life care knowledge and present opportunities to learn from each other in a peer-to-peer environment.
What are the benefits of getting involved?
Caru will support and improve;
- Staff confidence in having conversations with residents & families about death and dying
- Increases staff communication with residents and families on their future care wishes
- Advance Care Planning by establishing the residents’ wishes and preferences for their end-of-life care
- Planning and preparation for end-of-life care based on the residents’ wishes and preferences
- Integration of end-of-life care planning with relevant community services such as: specialist palliative care, GPs, funeral directors, acute hospitals etc.
- All staff, healthcare professionals and non-clinical staff, ensuring they have the appropriate level of knowledge, skills, competence and confidence to care for residents approaching end of life through the multidisciplinary structure of Caru
